A Question of Weaponry
I'm not sure this is the right place for this, but it seemed close. If it's not, I apologize!
I have a band of heroes. They've got a nice combination of ranged and melee fighters, physical, technological and magical talents, leadership positions, etc etc etc--everything you need to make a band of heroes work right.
What I'm having trouble with is a specific--namely, that one of my melee fighters is a girl, and I don't want her to use a stabbing weapon.
It's the whole feminist getting away from the phallus thing; Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Xena and Buffy have done it, I'd like to give it a shot. I was thinking about war fans, but research has told me they're not actually useful as a primary weapon (though they make great backup). I was also considering tonfa, and might still go with that, but--help!
The criteria are: she's a hand-to-hand martial artist and street fighter, capable of using just her body but also deadly with a weapon. I'd like the weapon not to be phallic (so staffs and the like are out as well, though I may go there as a compromise if I can't find anything else).
The story is speculative fiction, so any weapon from anywhere and any time period (including the future) is fair game.
