I posted this on my journal a few days back and someone pointed out I should post here! This is my original post:
What I need to work out is how long it would take to travel, both by food and by horse, between various areas: London and Bristol, Chepstow and Brecon, the North of England and London, Brecon and the East Coast of England, things like that. I can assume that the majority of people are fit living a (mostly) active lifestyle. When I was writing the original story I just used Google, set myself a reasonable route, and set it to calculate the time taken when walking. But I don't think this is particularly accurate (and doesn't cover horses either). Anyone got any idea of any decent resources I could use, or got any estimates themselves?
My problem isn't really how many miles an hour someone can walk/ride, but how many hours in a day someone can comfortably walk at a good pace (minus time for eating, killing nasties, and trying not to get lost, etc). And the same for horses: how long can a horse run/cantor/trot for before needing to rest (and how long can a rider ride for before their bum gets numb and they have to get off the horse and walk around!).
