The canon I'm working with has some of the characters (who just finished their sophomore year in high school) attend remedial summer school. Only the first day is shown, and for plot-reasons I'm not interested in what happens after it. I need exactly one detail: does summer school necessarily start on a Monday, or can it start on a different day of the week? I'm not from the US and Google has failed me.

Thanks in advance!

scheduling varies enough by school district in the US that I cannot imagine the answer being anything but "it can start on any weekday" same as the regular school year. I expect Monday is the most common by far, and Friday trailing the pack by quite a distance, but that's not quite the answer to the same question you asked.

I agree with alexseanchai re: variability. Is the school private or public, in US terms? Logistically, it'd be unusual for a public school district (funded by the state, plus sometimes small to medium local donations) to put a teacher-planning day on the first day of summer session; Monday would be pretty safe to assume for start of classes. On teacher planning days, the staff go in and students are off.

For private schools (separate tuition/fees, plus often substantial donations), anything goes.

Me: attended both, with a kid currently in the public system; most familiar with California metro regions.

Best wishes with your story!

ETA clarity: for the fall start of the regular school year, anything goes for public districts, too, but fortunately your q is for summer. :)

But here in NYC where we end at the very tail end of June, summer school most typically starts July 5th, or the weekday right afterwards. And it's in two sections, too - it's entirely possible for a high schooler to only do the second session instead of the first, so they don't even start in July. I seem to recall that happening to me one year.

Good to know. The post subject line says, "California, 2010s."

Every single school district is different. So, yeah, summer school can start any old day of the week and, as a bonus, the school year varies from August - May OR September - June! So summer school either starts in June or July. It's my understanding that schools in the South and Midwest are more likely to end around Memorial Day, but who the heck knows? I use to tease the niblings about that every June - "You know, the kids down South are out of school already!" but by the time they were in the first grade they knew to roll their eyes and say "yeah, yeah, but they started in August".

What state is this in, anyway?
