I have another obscure search:

I'm trying to find a building

1) that's in California (preferably in or near the Sacramento area),
2) could be the location for a charity dinner or other event of that sort, and
3) has some interesting historical/architechtural detail or controversy that two know-it-alls could have an argument about :)

I tried browsing various lists of historical buildings in the US but couldn't find any that would fit my criteria.

Turn Verein? It's probably a little more German than what you're looking for though.

You could pick any historical building and have them argue about historical preservation politics!

...okay maybe that's too boring even for people you want to demonstrate as know-it-alls.

There is the Julia Morgan House.

Also the Alhambra Theater.

Seconding the Julia Morgan House--she did some excellent work in Berkeley, too, though at an hour-ish from Sacramento, it's probably too far to be useful. (Notable are Hearst Mining on the UC campus and the Berkeley City Club, latter of which could easily be the site of some charity dinner, if the OP would like an alternate.)
